At first glance, a Rastafarian prophet from Jamaica, a cypherpunk with a hardware wallet and a hemp activist in Berlin seem to have little in common. But a closer look reveals a deep common denominator: resistance to systems of oppression - or, as the Rastafarian movement puts it, resistance to Babylon.
Whether in the religious-spiritual language of the Rastas or in the technological world of the Bitcoiners, the central motif remains the same: freedom from the system. A freedom that is understood not only materially, but also mentally, culturally and spiritually.
Rastafari and Babylon: the original resistance
The Rastafari movement emerged in Jamaica in the 1930s as a spiritual response to colonialism, slavery and systematic marginalization. Rastas called the Western power structure - consisting of government, military, church and capitalism - Babylon, which had alienated people from their African identity.
Rastas preached a return to the “natural order”, saw Haile Selassie as a divine king and wore dreadlocks not out of fashion, but as an expression of spiritual resistance. Cannabis - “ganja” in their language - was seen as a sacramental means of expanding consciousness and connecting with Jah, i.e. God.
Bitcoin as a spiritual technology?
Bitcoin was also born out of the spirit of resistance - not against colonialism, but against a global economy that is centralized, manipulable and dependent on political power structures. In the Bitcoin philosophy, “Babylon” is the central bank, the surveillance state, expropriation through inflation.
Bitcoiners believe in decentralized self-determination, mathematical incorruptibility and a monetary system that is not controlled by states. What is a technical project for many has almost spiritual traits for others: Bitcoin as a tool to liberate the individual from systemic control.
Cannabis: between medicinal plant and symbol of freedom
Cannabis combines both worlds: In Rastafarian culture, it is a sacred part of meditation and spiritual practice. For many Bitcoiners - or freedom-loving people in general - cannabis stands for self-determination over one's own body and the rejection of paternalism by the state.
The partial legalization of cannabis in Germany in 2024 has opened a window: What was criminalized for decades is now cautiously accepted as part of personal freedom. But history shows: The use of cannabis was never only motivated by medical or health reasons - it was always political as well. The Rastas have known this for a long time.
Common denominator: live consciously, act consciously
Whether in Kingston or Berlin, in crypto forums or spiritual gatherings: The intersection lies in the pursuit of inner and outer freedom. Rastafari reminds us that liberation does not only happen through technology, but through consciousness, attitude and dignity. Bitcoin shows that true freedom also requires economic independence.
Despite all their differences, both movements are an expression of a growing global quest: How do we want to live? Who owns our minds, our money, our bodies?
Boundaries & responsibility
Of course, caution is advised: It would be culturally insensitive to adorn oneself with Rasta symbols without knowing their history. It would be naive to see Bitcoin as a panacea. And it would be dangerous to view cannabis in purely consumerist terms without appreciating its cultural significance.
Anyone approaching these issues should do so with respect, contextual knowledge and honesty - not out of posturing, but out of genuine connection with what drives these movements.
Recognizing Babylon - and overcoming it
In a world full of control, distraction and alienation, Bitcoin, Rastafari and cannabis are more than just technology, religion or drugs. They are - in their own way - paths to a more conscious, freer existence. Not perfect, not without contradictions, but full of potential.
If you want to overcome Babylon, you first have to recognize it - and then have the courage to break new ground. Whether through Satoshi's white paper, psalms and Nyabinghi drums, or the first legal joint in your own garden: it's all about liberation - from the outside, and from the inside.
